Ex-Ferry Skipper Found Hanged

Summary

A Westcountry town has been stunned by the death of former River Dart ferry skipper Terry Atkins, 67, who was found hanged at his home. An ambulance was called to the house in Victoria Road, Dartmouth, at 6.30pm on Wednesday. Police say there are no suspicious circumstances. Mr Atkins, born and brought up in Dartmouth, worked as a fisherman before skippering first the River Dart passenger ferry, then tugs on the Lower Ferry operation. Former Dartmouth mayor Richard Rendle, a boyhood friend, said: "He was very well known in the town. This has come as a shock to the whole town." Torbay's coroner has been informed and an inquest is likely to be opened early next week.

THE British Surfing Association toasted one of the best events in contest history after the first "big wave" championship, held at Newquay's Fistral Beach on Wednesday in huge waves created by the aftermath of Hurricane Gordon. Hundreds gathered to watch the invited 16 surfers, and the winner was Scott Eastwood - judged to have ridden a perfect wave in the final heat. Contest director Tony Good said: "I've been involved in running contests for over 20 years, and without doubt this was the most exciting ever."
