ALTHOUGH the old company of Shapland and Petter has now closed in Barnstaple, there is plenty of its good furniture to be had - an example of which will be discovered today in Chilcotts, Honiton. The company was particularly good at bedroom pieces, as seen in the Arts and Crafts three-piece suite in oak, numbered 431, decorated with beaten copper knobs and hinges.

All carrying the mark S & PB on locks, the wardrobe, dressing table and chest suggest a far lighter, more airy interior as even the chest is on decorative feet above castors.
