We have seen all too clearly in Cornwall this year the danger from fire. Three lives lost in the Penhallow Hotel blaze in Newquay ought to have been warning enough to the fire authority that taking risks with the level of cover is simply not acceptable.

Yet today the Western Morning News reveals three fire stations where staffing levels are below the generally accepted safe minimum. At Truro, St Austell and Camborne, just four firefighters were on duty over the weekend. Normal crew strength is seven and the minimum safe level is five.
