EARLY photographs always recall old memories, but even more so are the slides used in magic lanterns, as these were more remote, professionally taken, and all the more memorable. At least the examples in Lays Auctions, Penzance, sale are bringing forth memories of an earlier photographic age. These slides have a new nostalgia now, advertising Cadbury's cocoa with a woman in period costume reaching up to a coachman and driver on an advertising plate. Described as "The Oldest and Still the Best", this hand- coloured example is one of three colour plates advertising cocoa, including one by Cecil Aldin, all c.1900 and calling for bids from Pounds 25.
Other similar lots in the sale don't have such a familiar or pleasant association, though still expect similar interest as they are larger with more variety like the seven illustrating the Boer War, offered with other hand-coloured examples of humour, elephants, catastrophe etc.See the full content of this document
