Summary


When British troops are being asked to perform difficult duties in two highly dangerous conflicts, against an unstable political background and questionable support from home, the job of the Defence Secretary is clear. He must back the servicemen and women unequivocally, in both word and deed.

So for Des Browne to be caught out first presiding over a Ministry of Defence that has scrapped some overseas allowances and then appearing to try to cover-up that unpalatable fact in the House of Commons is little short of disgraceful. He was right to apologise. He should also reinstate the allowances so that no one serving in Iraq or Afghanistan is out of pocket.
