Summary
In his resignation address from the steps of Number 10, our former Prime Minister Mr Brown expressed the view that he really despised the formal aspects of his job. State occasions, significant parades and commemorations and so forth seem to be included in his catch-all statement. Yet they are part of the warp and weft of our society. They express to old and new citizens alike how civilised we are, how important we believe such events to be, and how they bind us together as a people regardless of race, colour or creed.
The State opening of Parliament is but one of those great events. All my lifetime that event has been honoured, after a change of Government, by the presence of the former Prime Minister.See the full content of this document
