Councils have been ordered to name all staff earning more than Pounds 58,000 a year under Government plans to drive down town hall spending.

Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles has targeted "middle management waste" in his latest bid to prevent councils from cutting frontline services. The Conservative minister wants taxpayers to "look under the bonnet of their town hall" and is keen for salaries of scores of staff at Westcountry councils to be made public.
