One of Britain's quirkiest institutions, which celebrates the wonders of Bakelite, is threatened with closure because its fire exits may be too small to cope with the population's growing girths. The country's rising obesity problem has put the unique Bakelite Museum at risk.

The museum, over three floors of an 18th-century mill at Williton, Somerset, is famed as a charming temple to the "material of a thousand uses". It is the largest collection of plastics in the world containing 20,000 objects including vintage caravans, a Bakelite car, the first plastic bike and a Bakelite coffin.
