Heroine Takes On Spirit of a Lost Son

Summary

A proud contender on this year's children's book shortlist is Ann Kelley from Cornwall. Her nominated novel, The Bower Bird, is a follow-up to her highly acclaimed debut, The Burying Beetle, which introduced readers to her young heroine, Gussie, who lives, like Ann, in a beautiful spot overlooking the sea at St Ives.

Through the pages of The Burying Beetle - and now The Bower Bird - Ann gives a vibrant voice to the spirit of her own son Nathan, who died 22 years ago just seven days after undergoing the heart and lungs transplant they had hoped would save him. He was only 24 and had been weak and ill for all his short life. Ann draws on his thirst for knowledge and extraordinary courage to give flesh to her heroine's bones.
