A squirrel, for example, holds a nut in its forefeet, gnaws a hole in the top and inserts its lower incisors then, using these rather like a crowbar, it splits the nut open. A bank vole holds the nut beneath its body, using its forefeet to brace the nut against the ground. The base of the nut is wedged against its chest, the tip held sloping away from the animal. When the vole has made the initial hole in the shell it puts its nose inside and gnaws the side nearest to it from the inside.
