F you'd come under sniper fire as you stepped out of an aeroplane, the experience would likely leave a powerful impression. And so it did with Hillary Clinton when she had to dodge the bullets on a visit to Tuzla, Bosnia, in 1996. So profound, in fact, that Senator Clinton has recalled the incident in detail during her Democrat candidacy campaign. She has pumped up the impression that here is a woman of moral and physical courage. "There was no greeting ceremony, and we were basically told to run to our cars. Now, that is what happened," she said when every fact-checker debunked her tale this week.

Except that the incident never happened. On the contrary, footage shows Mrs Clinton surrounded by a contingent of children, parents and observers for whom the threat of flying bullets has not even occurred. And then there is the charming image of eight-year-old Bosnian girl Emina Bicakcic reading the former US First Lady a poem on the tarmac.
