Re you over 43? If so, can you remember what you were doing on July 30, 1966, the day that England last won the World Cup? In fact, I can't - but I can be certain I wasn't watching England's triumph. I had boycotted the whole series; I thought football was pathetic. Some of it was unconscious snobbery, football being a gentlemen's game played by cads, rather than rugby, which was a cads' game played by gentlemen; but then all my schoolmates were transfixed by the World Cup and I didn't like rugby either.
