DEVON and Cornwall Police insisted that informants were "highly effective" in tackling crime after new figures revealed it had spent more than Pounds 1 million on tip-offs in the last eight years.

Spending on informants - now known as covert human intelligence sources - totalled Pounds 1.09 million between 2001 and 2009 with Pounds 127,000 laid out last year.
