August disappointed on a number of fronts not least from a weather perspective.
It was also a frustrating month for investors who saw values of global equities fall yet again, over what has been one of the most volatile periods for many years. It really has seemed like a rollercoaster - whilst the ride takes you up and down you always end up back in the same place, except in August, the pod came off the tracks. There is so much uncertainty throughout the world that it is understandable that investors do not know which way to turn. Talk of political wrangling in the US and Europe, sovereign debt issues and fears of further recession all contribute to the uncertainty and it is this that causes the volatility. Much like watching a horror film, it is the fear of the unknown that is the scariest part and our psyche goes into overdrive, or at least it might if you let it.See the full content of this document
