The Church of England is a broad Church. That's hardly surprising. After all, when charging theologians to devise a popular rite for Christian worship, Elizabeth I declared that she'd "no desire to make windows into men's souls, adding, "There's only one Jesus Christ and all the rest is a dispute over trifles."

Yet while that very latitude can leave Anglicanism open to mockery, the Church has proved this week that it really can row in on the side of the angels. The problem, however, is that even in so doing, it harbours others who march to the beat of a very different drum.
