IREVERTED back to childhood over the bank holiday weekend and went blackberrying with my other half. It was great - armed with plastic bags we only needed to go to the outskirts of town to find hedgerows full of big, fat, shiny blackberries, there for the picking and as delicious as any other fruit.

My favourite pudding has to be apple and blackberry crumble, which really is an English classic. Blackberries are also excellent mixed with other seasonal fruits i.e. strawberries, plums and gooseberries, for a summer pudding with a hint of autumn - how wonderful is that? The most important thing is to ensure that before you eat or cook your blackberries, wash them thoroughly and pat dry with kitchen towel. Blackberries freeze well - all you need to do is pack them into containers and put them straight in the freezer, and when winter arrives you will delight in a delicious bowl of blackberries with their taste of late summer, splashed with a dollop of clotted cream - delicious beyond words.
