His name is rarely mentioned when we formulate a list Of those considered great within our time But I've always felt his story earns a more respectful place Than the token nod historians assign. I'm talking of a monarch, King George as he became, In my infancy, one day I heard him speak On the radio that nestled on the kitchen window sill Which brought us Workers' Playtime through the week.

The voice I heard was gentle, quite deliberate and slow, Sometimes he seemed to falter as he spoke, Father puffed a Woodbine, flicking ash towards the slab And I noticed how he grimaced through the smoke.
