Richard grew up in the city and now lives in Plymstock. After working in a jeweller's shop, becoming a driving instructor, and then working for five years at Plymouth City Council, he was seeking a change.

He had been dabbling in photography as a hobby since the age of 12, when his father gave him an old rangefinder camera and explained the basics to him.
