The Western Morning News' commitment to the Buy Local principle is well established and deeply ingrained. But that doesn't mean we cannot see the benefit of a ferry trip to France to stock up on wine once in a while. The booze cruise has become something of a British tradition and the benefits of being able to buy wines and spirits at a considerable discount compared to prices at home are widely enjoyed.

The rule of thumb that says any wines, beers, spirits or tobacco products brought in from other parts of the EU must be for the importer's personal use has stood us in good stead for several years. It's not an exact science, but it works. So the prospect of significantly tighter regulations on how much we British can bring back from a trip across the Channel is deeply worrying and threatens to punish bargain- hunters at the very time when getting value for money is so important.
