Summary


The early prospects - much sought after by its critics - of the coalition collapsing in a heap now seem remote as Liberal Democrat support in the country plunges to critically low levels.

If things go wrong, as well they might over the Lib Dem-inspired proposals, to replace the first past the post voting system with the alternative vote, Nick Clegg's party might feel inclined to walk out and leave David Cameron exposed and totally vulnerable. But that, almost certainly, is not going to happen. If it did, it would inevitably lead to a General Election. Liberal Democrat support in the country is now at such a pitiful level that the party could be wiped off the face of the political map. And they know it.
