T hey say the old songs are the best, so I guess the same must apply to the old singers. If you're heading off to Glastonbury Festival next week there are plenty of both on offer as this glorious Westcountry farm playground opens its gates to 175,000 revellers.

A couple of summers back, organiser Michael Eavis, now 74, who is these days ably assisted by his daughter Emily, was talking about gearing the festival to younger audiences, but there is no sign of a sea change. If anything, its headline billing - and a goodly proportion of its daytime roster - is veering in a mature and revivalist direction in 2009. Even the John Peel Stage - land of innovation and chance - has Echo and the Bunnymen, Doves and Jarvis Cocker rounding off respective nights.
