Wet-look furnishings Q. We suffered a major flood and our furniture was put in storage by our insurance company. We're now moving back into our house, but the storage company won't release the furniture until we've settled their bill. They say their contract is with us, not the insurance company. The insurance company have paid up until the end of last month, but we feel we're now being held to ransom.

A. Pay the storage company's bill and sort out the dispute later. While your furniture remains in storage the bill is just getting bigger. Your insurers will not reimburse you for any delay in removing your furniture while you were arguing over the bill, whereas they will have to pay for the storage of your property up to the point where it was reasonably practicable for you to move back in. In the meantime the only winners are the storage company. Out on a date Q. I issued a post-dated cheque to someone who was doing some work for me because I was going to be away on the date they reckoned they would finish the job. However the cheque was paid in a week early and was honoured by my bank, which made my account overdrawn. When I complained, the bank told me there is no such thing as a post- dated cheque.
