WHEN Plymouth Argyle set off from Devon nine days ago on their way north to their pre-season training camp at the University of Stirling, there was a possibility that they might return home after leaving behind a couple of players in Scotland.

Aberdeen had made no secret of their desire to tempt Steve MacLean (inset) and Jim Paterson away from Home Park, while other Scottish Premier League clubs were also being linked with the two Argyle players. Heart of Midlothian were rumoured to be keen on MacLean, while Motherwell reportedly wanted to take Paterson back to Fir Park.
