Magistrates have urged the Government to give them greater powers to jail offenders for up to 12 months.

John Thornhill, chairman of the Magistrates' Association, told its annual meeting in London that the move, which would double the current sentencing powers, could save up to Pounds 65 million in reduced custody and trial costs.
