I SHARE your horror (WMN, November 4) at the Pounds 1,000 rail ticket - probably priced to deter anyone from trying such a journey, an endurance test in itself, with too many possible missed connections on what remains of a Victorian rail network that has suffered too much make do and mend since the war.

It is high time we built the best mass terrestrial transports our brains can invent to leapfrog the French TGV, a copy of the Japanese bullet train in the 1950s. Let us at least hold a design competition.
