LOOKING back over our wish list and predictions for 2009, it's clear that some of our concerns about the potential depth of the recession for our manufacturers were more than justified. Last year turned out to be very difficult for many of our regional companies, particularly in the early months when orders and output volumes took a real battering.

We also hoped that 2009 would be the year when Government acted on its new enthusiasm for "industrial activism" and so we were very pleased when, at the Labour Party conference, important announcements about support for manufacturing were unveiled.
