Summary
News from the British Naturalists Association tells of the 10th annual UK-wide National Whale and Dolphin Watch from August 5th - 7th. Sea Watch the marine education and research charity is organising it and urging everyone to take part. For the past 10 years sightings and information from the public and trained observers have helped advance our understanding of the distribution and health of marine mammal populations around the UK coast with 12 different species regularly seen during watches. In total 28 species of dolphins, whales and porpoises have been recorded in UK and Irish waters.
Ways to help these wonderful creatures include not using plastic bags as many end up in water courses and then in the open seas. If you eat fish be sure it is sustainably caught. Do not swim with, touch or feed UK dolphins, it can cause stress and also spread diseases by close contact. Do not follow or chase dolphins, whales or porpoises in a boat. Don't put things like cotton buds down the toilet. Many are failing to be processed by our sewerage systems and are appearing on British beaches.See the full content of this document
