ONE OF Gibraltar's many claims to fame is that it is a haven for online gambling companies. William Hill and Ladbrokes, to mention just two big British names, decided last summer to transfer their online activities from the UK to sunnier climes on this tip of the Iberian peninsula.

Their main motive was the tax rate. It was, in business terms, a no-brainer. As long as they remained in the UK, they paid tax rates of 15 per cent on their online activities. In Gibraltar, they have to pay only 1.5 per cent.
