A FEW years back when crop circles were fashionable, the media were besieged by people who earnestly believed that the marks were left by visitors from another planet eager to get in touch. It struck me at the time that if these little green men were clever enough to get here in the first place, they would soon work out that simply dropping off a postcard or picking up a phone would be far better means of communication than flattening an acre or two of old Mr Wonnacott's barley.

Of course, it soon emerged that the circles - nearly all of them within a mile or two of an agricultural college - were invariably made by students rounding off a good night out on the cider.
