Minister Says Flood Defences Will Keep Coast Rail Line Open

Flood defences will keep the main railway line into the Westcountry open despite the possible impact of sea level rises caused by climate change, a minister claimed yesterday.

The assurance came from Environment Minister Lord Henley on a visit to an underpressure stretch of the line in Dawlish to see for himself what needs to be done to protect vital national services. His visit was timed to coincide with neap high tide and he witnessed for himself how a stiff onshore wind sends spray onto the sea wall and railway track. It is spring tides which sometimes send massive waves crashing over the line undermining the track and halting services.
