TEACHERS could face five-year checks to ensure they are fit to teach and could be banned from the classroom if they are not up to scratch.

New reforms by Children's Secretary Ed Balls would include a "licence to teach" that would put teachers on a par with doctors and solicitors. Government officials said the renewable licence, outlined in the Schools White Paper, would weed out poor teachers.
