NOT everyone is a supporter of the way Britain spends money raised by taxpayers on foreign aid overseas. But we're prepared to bet the majority of people here in the Westcountry will be even less pleased to read about the way substantial sums from the Department for International Development are being squandered here at home.

It seems bizarre that Pounds 46 million in cash from the department has been spent here in the UK over the past five years. And it gets positively perverse the deeper one digs into this issue. Giving French language teachers in Devon a total of Pounds 220,000 over three years to "explore whether tourism could lift people out of poverty in Maki, West Africa" is mind-boggling.
