Mushroom Meal Perfect for a Vole

Summary

WRITING of bank voles yesterday, I forgot to say how much they enjoy fungi as food, yet another good source of sustenance for them at this time of year. They are only about one ounce (28g) in weight and may live for about 18 months in the wild. Not long, we may think, but with four or five litters of four or five babies in a year, the species is able to survive well enough.

The field vole is more yellowy brown in colour. Like the bank vole, it has a chubby appearance but a shorter, more pink tail, hence another English name of short-tailed vole. They are probably the main food of barn owls, usually forming about 90 per cent of their diet, as is shown by the examination of the owl pellet contents.
