For a girl destined to hold positions of great responsibility in some of the grandest country houses in Cornwall, Rose Gummow didn't get off to a very promising start. Rose Gummow was born and bred at Millbrook in South East Cornwall. She was the oldest of 12 children, six of whom survive. At 14, she left school. Her mother already had her bag packed and she was sent into service at nearby Anthony House, which was - and still is - the home of the Carew Poles.
