If britain's badgers have been saved from a pointless, counter- productive slaughter, Ben Bradshaw is to be congratulated. Hopefully he has seen through the nonsense spouted by the National Farmers' Union (NFU) and will have the courage not only to keep in place the new rules that stop farmers buying and selling diseased cattle, but also introduce the gamma interferon test which will root out even more infected beasts. Then the disease will decline at an even faster rate.
Bovine TB is what it says: a disease of cattle. The great epidemic of the 1940s and 1950s, when about 40 per cent of the national herd was infected, was solved without one badger being killed. Then, as now, cattle carried and spread the disease.See the full content of this document
