RUMOURS are rife that horses and ponies are either being dumped or neglected as owners feel the pinch due to the economic downturn but there is little hard evidence to support this.

The WMN has received two reports in the last three weeks of ponies found dead - one dumped in a field gateway and two seen dead on the A39. The police believe the latter was a road accident in the early hourse of Saturday, April 4, and that they "could not arrange for a licensed slaughter man to attend until daylight". They also confirm that the driver was spoken to at the scene and it appears the animals got on to the road by breaking through their fence.
