Nine New Recruits to Join the Army

Summary


Nine young recruits from the Westcountry will begin their careers in the Army this week. Taking the Oath of Allegiance to Queen and country on Friday, seven of the young men will then join as Infantry Riflemen in the Rifles, one with the Royal Armoured Corps and one going into the Royal Artillery. The official ceremony will take place at the Plymouth Armed Forces recruiting office, at Derry's Cross, at 9.30am. Those joining the Rifles are: Scott Thompson, 18, Nabil Labban, 24, Christopher Turvey, 18, Terry Keith, 17, Christopher Manners, 18, Stuart Gundry, 17, and 17-year-old Ian Roberts. Richard Knight, 20, will be joining the Royal Artillery and Joseph Kelsey, 17, will be joining the Royal Armoured Corps.

LANDOWNERS in Cornwall are being asked to check whether their hedges and trees pose a hazard to road users. Cornwall County Council is asking owners to check whether hedges need trimming and to look out for broken branches. The final date for hedge cutting, under the Single Payment Scheme, is Friday, February 29. A new leaflet, called Cornish Roadside Hedge Management, has been produced and can be ordered on 01872 222000.
