I must take issue with your editorial ("No justification for this cruelty", October 23 which suggests a lack of awareness of the situation concerning calf exports.
To stay in business - tough enough in recent times - dairy farmers must maximise all possible sources of income, providing high animal welfare standards apply. Male dairy calves - not suitable for beef production in this country - have had to be put down at birth if there is no viable option because of the cost of feeding/caring for them with no economic return.See the full content of this document
