No One's Getting Rich On Housing Benefit

Summary

It is wrong to suggest that some people are "feathering their own nests" with housing benefit. In some parts of the country Pounds 400 per week for a four-bedroom house is quite average and in more desirable areas rents will be a lot more. Tenants can only use the benefit to pay their rent and then top up themselves the difference between what the council can allow them and what the landlord charges.

Landlords, for the most part, charge the market rate in their area and also often have to cover their own mortgage costs, which, if you have a house in London, is likely to be considerable. If we are to avoid our cities becoming ghettos for the rich where no ordinary person can live and work we need a great deal more social housing at affordable rents with no right to buy, which is what has created the need for housing benefit support in private sector housing in the first place.
