Oregon Petition Just a Con

Summary

I really can't let numerous people write to the WMN about the "Oregon Petition" that "challenges global warming", without some comment. We are told it shows that 32,000 scientists say there is no such thing. Now, there may be good scientific arguments against global warming, but the Oregon Petition is a con - no more, no less (WMN letter from Peter Wyatt, "Predictions of crisis are bigger news").

The "petition" is the result of a mass mailing to a half a million US scientists - everyone from computer scientists to vets, of whom 32,000 returned a reply-paid postcard agreeing with a petition statement on it (a lousy return rate, by the way). It was organised by the slightly oddball Oregon Institute for Science and Medicine which, among other things, publishes material on how to survive the coming nuclear war.
