AMALE pheasant is about the woods and lane back of us. He walks just ahead by a few yards, or those other things called metres, and I think he is leading us away from his mate in the woods. Probably they have a nest.

We see them in more or less the same spot most summers. Well, for the past four years. He is a splendid-looking fellow and his mate is a nicely speckled fawn-brown.
