Pipe Smokers Hit Bard On His Head

Summary

A s MORE and more people relinquish the habit of smoking, various memorabilia will fall into disuse and many old names along with them. Flowers Keg Bitter was a once common sight on the bar in pubs, but as fewer people smoked and new ideas on advertising appeared, these old accessories were dumped, but not all as so many were produced by some of the best potteries in the country, so are now very collectable.

An example of this is the ashtray by Carltonware, modelled with a central bust of Shakespeare, complete with quill pen and book in his hands. At 8in (22cm) in diameter, this is too large for a domestic piece, and the prominent figure was deliberately placed so as to provide a useful tapping point for pipe smokers who otherwise tended to knock out their bowls on the side of ashtrays, often tipping out the contents by mistake.
