Summary
The Western Morning News has always been a strong supporter of local authorities in the Westcountry who get a raw deal from the Government. When the councils are criticised for cutting services or pushing up council tax we have consistently urged readers to lay the blame where it generally belongs - at the feet of ministers who are failing to provide sufficient grant support.
But there are areas of spending which councillors cannot safely reduce and then point the finger at the Government when council tax payers complain. And keeping the roads in good repair, salting them when necessary and resurfacing them when required is one such area. So the gripe today from Devon council leader Brian Greenslade that nearly pounds2 million of cuts to the road budget have come as a direct consequence of an inadequate settlement from the Government is simply not good enough.See the full content of this document
