Pensioners' leaders have called on the Government to declare "war on the poverty" of the elderly as they mark the centenary today of the Act that gave birth to the State Old Age Pension.

They pointed out that 100 years after pensions were born - the first ones were paid in January 1909 - one in four retirees now live on an income that is below the official level of poverty of pounds151 a week. The basic state pension is pounds90.70 a week.
