Rates Rises Are 'Toxic Cocktail' for Businesses

MOST South West firms face potentially crippling rises in their business rates, the Government admitted last night. Nationally, the majority of pubs, shops and private companies will actually be better off as a result of a controversial tax revaluation. However, the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) revealed just 44 per cent of bills in the South West would fall.

Officials stressed the department "will not collect a penny more of extra revenue" as a result of the 2010 revaluation. But critics accused the Government of "spinning" the announcement without making clear the exact rises in bills.
