Just a week left to choose the wines for Christmas Day. It's tricky to narrow the choice down to personal favourites - but it's fun.

I'll start with the fizz. If economy dictates a modest price, or if "ch am -pagne cocktail" concoctions with fruit juice, or brandy, or Guinness are planned, my bargain sparkler of the year is Asda Extra Special Vintage Cava 2009, currently chopped in price from Pounds 8.98 to Pounds 5. This is proper stuff with apples and raisins on the nose, a real gush of mousse and fresh but full fizz flavours.
