Ministers have finally pulled the plug on disastrous plans for a single fire control centre for the South West after the project cost taxpayers Pounds 230 million.

Against fears that lives were at risk, emergencies across an area from Cornwall to Gloucestershire were to be answered from a call centre in Taunton from next year.
