French calls for a return to direct subsidies for European farming have been criticised as a recipe for reviving infamous surplus beef and butter mountains and milk and wine lakes.

French agriculture minister Michel Barnier told French radio Europe should put a brake on agriculture reforms in the face of alarming rises in world food prices. Instead, Brussels should revert to propping up EU farmers via cash aid to help them compete on world markets. In the past the system resulted in costly surpluses as food supply soared regardless of demand.
