Summary
THE rowan or mountain ash trees are looking splendid this year with a wealth of scarlet berries cheering up the winter countryside. The berries are loved by birds and the tree itself is popular with us as protective against dark forces. A rowan sprig in a pocket keeps us from the Evil Eye as well as rheumatism. Farmers used to take cows to pasture giving them a flick with a rowan stick to prevent any evil doings or stop the loss of profit from milk or butter.
Churn handles and tethering pegs were often rowan as were the cross timbers of fireplaces. Even in the 20th century springs of rowan would be plaited around an animal's horns, while rowan berries fed to pregnant mares and cows caused them to go to term.See the full content of this document
