Acclaimed American novelist Jerome Salinger never spoke about Exercise Tiger - the D-Day rehearsal that went disastrously wrong off the South Devon coast 66 years ago. But, according to this new biography about the famous recluse, he was there - and even helped to keep it a secret.
Supposed to be a bloodless practice inv olving thousands of assault troops storming Slapton Sands because of its resemblance to Utah, one of the Normandy invasion beaches, more than 300 ended up dying during the live-fire exercise and another 749 soldiers and sailors perished when a s -up convoy was attacked in Lyme Bay by German E-boats.See the full content of this document
